At 1am on Wednesday morning 13 jeeps of the Israeli Army invaded the village of Burin, just south of Nablus. They ransacked the home of Mohammed Qadous, kidnapping his 20 year old son, Amr Qadous.
Amr was a volunteer at the Bilal Najjar Cultural Centre in Burin. Volunteers at the Centre are regularly harassed by the Army and arrested. Just over a week ago, volunteer Qais Imran was kidnapped from his home in the middle of the night. After being held in isolation with no contact with his lawyer or family, Qais, like the other boys, has been transferred to the Apartheid prison of Megiddo. Mohammed’s arrest brings the number of volunteers arrested to 9 and a total of 13 Burin villagers in Apartheid prisons.
The Army harass villages like Burin, taking young men, to try and break the will of villagers. Burin is surrounded by the illegal settlements of Bracha and Yitzhar, built on stolen village land. These illegal settlements house some of the most violent and extremist settler terrorists. They regularly attack Burin and its surrounding villages and destroy land and olive trees in order to expand their illegal settlements further. This is all done under the cover of the Army, which facilitates the settlers terrorism.
The targeting of young men in order to apply pressure on Palestinians to cease their legitimate resistance to the illegal occupation of their land, has been a consistent policy of Apartheid Israel in recent years. In a recent years the amount of Palestinian children detained by Apartheid Israel has increased. It now averages about 700 children a year kidnapped by the Army, often held in isolation for days, with no access to their family or a lawyer. Many report torture and are forced to sign ‘confessions’ written in Hebrew, a language they do not understand.
SFP works for the release of all prisoners. However, the issue of children and young men held by the Army is particularly pertinent. We implore our international friends and supporters to join the grassroots Palestinian movement requesting boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) of Apartheid Israel. This is a tangible way you can help make a difference, in the face of international Government’s complicity in Apartheid Israel’s war crimes, and make it clear that Apartheid is not acceptable.
