19/01/14: Burin villagers attacked by Army and settlers for the third day running

On 19 January the Village Council of Burin and villagers continued their work on an agricultural road near the illegal settlement of Bracha. As the villagers worked they were attacked by 15 settlers who tried to assault members of the Village Council and prevent the work of the bulldozer. They were accompanied by the Israeli Army who then declared the area a “closed military zone” on the pretext of security, preventing the villagers from completing their work for the third day running.

The Army not only prevented the work of the bulldozer but also detained the vehicle for 4 hours, threatening to confiscate it as it was working in a closed military zone. When villagers asked to see the order declaring the area a closed military zone, the paper presented showed the date 10 November 2013. This is a common and illegal tactic by the Army, which supports the criminal actions of the illegal settlers. In an act of defiance and resilience the villagers managed to secure the release of the bulldozer after 4 hours.

The Village Council and villagers have remained determined to finish the work on the agricultural road, which is vital to provide better access for farmers to their land. The road will lead from Karm Alshqof to Al Munatir area of Burin. The area is in so-called Area B under the failed Oslo Accords, giving the area full Palestinian Authority civil control, with military control remaining with Apartheid Israel.

Burin, just south of Nablus, is surrounded by the illegal settlements of Bracha and Yitzhar, which house some of the most violent settlers in the West Bank. Farmers and villagers are under constant attack from the settlers and Army which invade the village to harass Palestinians on a daily basis. However, the villagers remain steadfast, as their determination to improve their land and build the road for the benefit of their farmers shows.

SFP is supporting farmers in Burin and it’s surrounding villages. A small part of that support is through planting olive trees, many of which have been cut or burnt by these criminal settlers. We ask you all to support the farmers to remain steadfast and consider donating to our olive tree planting campaign and sharing our page with our friends.
