SFP CAMPAIGN LAUNCH: SFP calls for support for Palestine’s female farmers

SFP calls for support for Palestine’s female farmers

Following on from our successful olive tree and 10685128_10205671740607009_1515945103_nthyme planting campaigns, today the SFP Steering Committee is launching a campaign to specifically work with and support female Palestinian farmers. We are asking our supporters for their kind donations to help us achieve our goal of supporting female farmers to remain steadfast on the land and support their economic development in the face of a the brutal Israeli Occupation.11128946_10205671740647010_1924450666_n

The Palestinian herb thyme is a major source of income for Palestinian women, who grow the herb used in the famous Palestinian tea, selling it at markets across Palestine. SFP has already been working with women-led groups in Biddiya, Saffa, Beit Furik and Ramallah, planting thyme, olive and lemon trees and taking direct action against the Occupation. We want to expand that support to more villages and land, helping to support female cooperatives across Palestine.

Palestinian women have been at the forefront of the resistance to the illegal Occupation of their lands. All-female cooperatives that exist across Palestine have historically enhanced the spirit of cooperation among women, working together to protect all Palestine’s lands, which are permanently exposed to attacks by settlers and colonial Armies.

SFP would like to thank everyone that has supported us to date and particularly our regularly planting campaigns. We would be very grateful if you would consider donating again so we may now assist Palestinian female farmers. Please click here to find out how to donate and please share this campaign widely.11077785_10205614993668371_807177986581112154_o

08/04/15: SFP and Nablus join the call for the immediate release of Khalida Jarrar

On Wednesday 8 April SFP joined other Nablus activists calling for the immediate release of Palestinian law maker Khalida Jarrar, participating in a sit-in in front of the International Committee for the Red Cross in Nablus. Khalida was kidnapped from her home in Ramallah in the early hours of Thursday 4 April. She has since been sentenced by an Israeli Apartheid Military Court to be held for 6 months without trial or charge, commonly known as administrative detention.

52 year old Khalida, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, has been constantly harassed by Apartheid Israel. Last year she was sentenced to exile from Ramallah to Jericho for a number of months. She refused to leave, setting up protests tents until the order was rescinded. Prior to that, Khalida who also suffers from serious health conditions, had been denied exit from the West Bank to receive treatment in Jordan. Since the imposition of her administrative detention order and the huge worldwide condemnation, an Apartheid Israeli Military Judge postponed the order pending a further Court appearance. All the time Khalida remains interned by the Occupation.

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Center for Studies Israeli authorities have issued 319 administrative detention orders for Palestinians since the beginning of 2015, six times as many as they did in the same period the previous year. Adaministrative detention as practised by Apartheid Israel is illegal under international law.

SFP joins the call for international support for the release of Khalida and all Palestinian prisoners, particularly administrative detainees interned by Apartheid Israel. Please sign and share the petition and take action in your State, to call for the release of Khalida and the other prisoners.

On Saturday 28 February activists in London danced dabke to Covent Garden where they shut down 4 shops complicit in the sale of Israeli goods. Activists from the group ‘London Palestine Action’ entered the shops, closing them down and chanting “if you sell Israeli goods we’ll shut you down”.

Sabon, one of the shops targeted by the activists, is Israeli owned and its factory is on the site of 3 Palestinian villages, ethnically cleansed by the occupying Zionists in 1948. Activists also shut down Sakare, Obey Your Body and Neal’s Yard Remedies, who all use ingredients (Dead Sea minerals) in their cosmetics, stolen from Palestinian land.

The action is the culmination of advocacy that took place across the UK and the world as part of the annual Israeli Apartheid Week. Since the 2005 call from Palestinian civil society for boycott, divestment and sanctions, the UK has been particularly active, shutting down arms factories during the recent Israeli massacre in Gaza and pushing for divestment by all the main education institutions and Trade Unions. Activists in London vowed to step up their actions against any companies or institutions in the UK complicit or profiteering from the oppression of the Palestinian people.

SFP sends their heartfelt thanks to the activists in London and around the world for their continued support of Palestine. We encourage people everywhere to join the struggle and take action to implement the Palestinians call for boycott, divestment and sanctions. Please click here for more details.

Organisers announce “Global Political Prisoner’s Day” – 12/12/14

Message from the organisers of the Global Political Prisoner’s Day:
Palestinian cartoonist Naji Salim al-Ali's Handala.

Palestinian cartoonist Naji Salim al-Ali’s Handala.

The people’s uprising is not a crime, it is universal justice
The unions, human rights activists, academics and students of Argentina have united with various groups worldwide, including Palestinian human rights organisations, (such as the Free Shireen Issawi Campaign) to call for a day of action for  Global Political Prisoner’s Day, on 12 December 2014.
On this day in 2013 ten Argentinian oil workers were convicted to prison sentences in a case, their supporters affirm, was a grave violation of human rights, including torture. The oil workers stood up for all workers to have better working conditions, setting up assemblies to decide how to fight.
Today Palestinians are imprisoned for challenging Israel’s apartheid state. They are imprisoned because they fight for the return of their stolen land which continues to be illegal annexed.
Palestinians, including children, are tried in military courts. The conviction rate, according to a 2013 US State Department Human Rights Report, is over 99%. Since 1967 700,000 Palestinians have been imprisoned; 42% of all Palestinian men have been jailed. Israel also practices Administrative Detention, imprisoning Palestinians without charge or trial in violation of international law. Many prisoners suffer from medical neglect.
On Wednesday 5 November a French Court rejected the ninth appeal of George Abdhala, who after 30 years imprisonment is the longest serving Political prisoner in Europe. The decision was not issued by the court but was announced by the Federation of Jewish organisations in France. Governmental political convenience also allows cleared prisoners to languish in Guantanamo Bay.
In Egypt thousands of political opponents have been imprisoned, some have been tortured to death. Three Al Jazeera journalists have also been detained. China is thought to have the most political prisoners in the world. In Tibet and East Turkestan people are arrested for peaceful protests. Worldwide people, too numerous to mention, risk their lives for the ideal of freedom, democracy and social and political justice.
People exercising their legal right to resist occupation, or who resort to democratic violence having exhausted all peaceful means, are political prisoners. They should therefore be treated with all the conventions and rights applicable to prisoners of war. There have always been some brave men and women who are prepared to risk their lives and liberty for their people’s freedom. It is unacceptable that those people should be detained without trail, kept in inhumane conditions and face torture or medical neglect.
We start this campaign for the independence and freedom of all oppressed people against those who disregard human value, rights and liberty. We call upon all who reject injustice in the world to participate on the 12 December, making it a day for political prisoners. We are aware that each country or organisation will have particular causes to which they are dedicated. They will bring their energies and resources to that cause but ideally will remain aware that an injury to one is an injury to all. We intend that this day will become an annual event until all prisoners are freedom.
Our message is:
  1. Global Political Prisoners Day must become an annual tradition to call for the release of all political prisoners until freedom.
  2. The international struggle for oppressed peoples everywhere should be enhanced. The people’s uprising is not a crime, it is universal justice
  3. People resisting the occupation of their land should be treated according to International conventions concerning prisoners of war when they are detained.

UPDATE: Detainee Ghassan Najjar’s family appeal to human rights organisations for visitation

On Monday 3 November Ghassan Najjar’s father submitted an appeal to the International Committee of the Red Cross to appeal to them to intervene to pressure Israeli authorities to allow him and his wife to visit Ghassan. Ghassan has been interned by Israel since he was kidnapped from his home by the Army on 27 August 2014.

Since his kidnapping Ghassan was held in solitary confinement with no access to legal advice, his family or human rights organisations for nearly a month. He was then transferred to Megiddo prison, inside the ’48 borders in violation of international law, and his elderly mother and father have been denied visits with the Occupation citing unexplained “security” reasons. He is due to appear back in front of a military judge on 24 November, nearly 3 months since his kidnapping.

Palestinians are regularly denied permission to visit their interned family members. By transferring Palestinians to prisons inside the ’48 borders Israel is violating international law and ensuring limited access to their families. SFP members regularly attend the military courts to observe and provide support to interned Palestinians. Please click here for a recent account of a day in Salem Military Court.

We would kindly ask those that have not already done so to sign our petition calling for the release of SFP members Ghassan Najjar and Dr. Yousef Abdul Haq and share this with your friends. This petition will be submitted to the Chief Prosecutor prior to Ghassan’s next appearance in Court on 24 November, and therefore we need as many signatures as possible to add weight to the appeal. Please sign and share the petition by clicking here.

SFP calls on all Palestinians to rise up and bring all the Palestinian prisoners home. We also encourage people around the world to join our uprising and work to expose the international complicity with the Occupation and particularly internment of Palestinians. Please click here for details of how you can get involve in international campaigns.

22/09/14: Raising the Palestinian flag – a call to the World

As part of a series of activities planned over the coming week, Palestinians marched around the Old City of Nablus chanting patriotic sound bites and waving the Palestinian flag. Similar events took place across the West Bank area of Palestine organised by the popular resistance, student movements and several Palestinian organisations.

Under the symbol of the Palestinian flag, the events aim at reaffirming the Palestinian national struggle for liberation. A struggle, and flag, which many Palestinians have given their life for, most recently the over 2000 Palestinians massacred by the Occupation in Gaza.

The organisers, which include SFP, are calling for the raising of the Palestinian flag across the world to symbolise the Palestinians right to freedom and justice. SFP asks friends around the world to join in this week and show solidarity with the Palestinian struggle by changing your profile pictures on social media to the Palestinian flag, lobbying your local government and associations to fly the flag over buildings and raise the flag in your own homes and communities.

21/09/14: Ghassan Najjar detention renewed for a fourth time

Today SFP member and community activist Ghassan Najjar again had his interrogation order renewed by an Israeli Military Judge inside Petah Tikva interrogation facility. This is the fourth renewal of Ghassan’s interrogation order since his kidnapping on 27 August 2014. To date he has had no access to proper legal advice, other than a short conference with his lawyer in the few minutes in which he appears in Court.

Ghassan’s detention comes as SFP, Nablus popular resistance, organisations and associations are united in their condemnation of the detention on nearly 7,000 Palestinians in Israeli Apartheid Prisons. Tomorrow SFP will join other groups, including Palestinian political parties, in calling on the International Committee of the Red Cross to fulfill their obligations to Palestinian detainees and apply pressure to Apartheid Israel for their immediate and unconditional release.

In the meantime we ask you to continue to email the British Consulate in Jerusalem asking them to use their diplomatic wait to ensure Ghassan has unfettered access to his lawyer and is ultimately released. You can email the Consulate via Suha Zeidan – suha.zeidan@fco.gov.uk

14/09/14: ACTION ALERT: Ghassan’s detention order renewed for 3rd time

On Sunday 14 September Ghassan Najjar, community activist and SFP Steering Committee member, appeared before Petah Tikva interrogation facility court where a military Judge renewed Ghassan’s detention order for another 7 days. This is the third renewal following his kidnapping on 27 August.

Ghassan’s family are extremely concerned for Ghassan’s health. As previously reported by SFP Ghassan has an underlying knee injury, which he was due to have surgery on and in the meantime was receiving daily painkilling injections. Ghassan is also suffering back pain from the stress positions he is being held in during interrogation. He is receiving medication but typically this is only aspirin and Israeli prison doctors have been accused on many occasions of turning a blind eye to evidence of torture of detainees and inadequate care.

Ghassan was kidnapped from his home on 27 August and since then he has only been able to briefly call his parents once. His lawyer is only able to see him in court for the few minutes he appears and the Israeli Military Judge renews the order under which the Israeli Security Services can continue to hold Ghassan. Ghassan has had no legal advice and his lawyer has not had access to the ‘evidence’ against him. He is also not able to be present with Ghassan while he is being interrogated, which can typically last for hours each day, before detainees are returned to isolation.

Petah Tikva is a notorious interrogation facility inside historical Palestine (‘Israel’), in violation of international law, which states that prisoners must not be transferred out of the territory they are detained within by the occupying force. This also prevents many families from being able to visit their loved ones, as Palestinians are regularly denied permits to travel inside ’48 (historical Palestine, ‘Israel’). Many Gazan families are permanently denied, with their loved one often not seeing their family for many years.

Human rights organisations have repeatedly documented cases of torture, with Palestinians held for weeks on end in tiny cells, subjected to extreme temperatures and constant artificial light. They are then interrogated by the Israeli Security Services for hours on end, shackled with their hands behind their back to metal chairs. Many Palestinians also report beatings and threats against them and their families if they do not ‘confess’. Lawyers are not able to access or accompany their clients during these weeks of interrogation.

On Tuesday 9 September 35 year old Raed al-Jabari died while in Israeli custody. Raed was due for release on bail but was pronounced dead, with the Israeli Prison Service claiming he hung himself. However, following an autopsy, which showed no marks around his neck you’d expect to see if someone hung themselves, the cause of death was established as internal bleeding from multiple blows. It is clear Raed was murdered by the Israeli prison authorities, following his torture. In a similar case a week prior to Raed’s murder, 33 year old Muhammad Hussein Rabee was hospitalised after being tortured for 35 days inside another notorious Israeli interrogation facility in Jerusalem, known as the ‘Russian Compound’.

As of 31 July there were 6,578 Palestinians illegally held by Apartheid Israel, this includes 446 Palestinians held under what is known as administrative detention orders. These detainees receive no trial and are not charged, and their lawyer has no access to any ‘evidence’ against them. They are held under secret orders authorised by an Israeli Military Judge, which can be renewed indefinitely. 73 year old Dr. Yousef Abdul Haq, a community leader and SFP member, is currently being held under a 4 month administrative detention order after he was kidnapped in the middle of night by the Israeli Army on 26 August.

The number of detainees held by Apartheid Israel has already rapidly grown with many Palestinians kidnapped during Israel’s war on the people of Gaza not included in the above figure. The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society also released a statement that in the last week alone a further 174 Palestinians had been kidnapped across the West Bank area of Palestine.

SFP urgently asks all friends around the world to sign and share our petition calling for the immediate release of Dr. Yousef and Ghassan. To sign the petition and share with your friends and colleagues please click here.

Please also see our campaign, with suggested letters for your respective representatives, regarding he illegal detention of Dr. Yousef.

In addition, we would ask that you kindly continue to email the British Consulate in Jerusalem asking them to intervene in the case of Ghassan. Ghassan’s one year old son is half British and both his son and British wife are understandably distraught. Please email Suha Zeidan (suha.zeidan@fco.gov.uk) at the Consulate and ask them to visit Ghassan in Petah Tikva and raise the matter of his immediate release with the Israeli Government.

Your help does make a difference and we understand was the reason Ghassan was able to finally, briefly, call home. We kindly ask you keep up that pressure until Ghassan and Dr. Yousef are both safely home with their families, along with all Palestinian political detainees. Dr. Yousef and Ghassan both tirelessly campaigned for Palestinian prisoners, suffering harassment and imprisonment from the Occupation as a result. Ghassan is due back in Court on Sunday 21 September, where is interrogation could be renewed again, please keep up the pressure and demand his unconditional release.

10/09/14: Thank you – Ghassan able to telephone home

Yesterday Ghassan Najjar was able to telephone his parents from Petah Tikva interrogation facility, where he has been held in isolation since 31 August. He confirmed that bar his back pain, that he is now receiving medication for, he was doing well.

SFP would like to thank all those that wrote to the British Consulate and signed our online petition. We urge you to continue to email the Consulate (details below) and sign and share our petition as Ghassan is due back in Court, where a Judge could extend his detention again, on Sunday.

This demonstrates your solidarity and action really does make a difference. The Red Cross contacted the Israeli Prison Authorities and shortly afterwards Ghassan was able to make a short phone call home. We hope with your continued help, Ghassan will have full access to his lawyer and return home soon.

Please continue to write to the British Consulate in Jerusalem urging them to maintain pressure on the Israeli Authorities to release Ghassan safely to his family. Ghassan’s one year old, half British son, is very much looking forward to seeing his father.

You can email Suha Zeidan at the British Consulate in Jerusalem at Suha.zeidan@fco.gov.uk

Please also sign and share our petition calling for the immediate release of Dr. Yousef Abdul Haq and Ghassan.
