29/11/14: Nablus says “thank you” on International Solidarity with the Palestinian People Day

On Saturday 29 November activists from SFP gathered in Nablus’s Martyrs Square to honour the international solidarity activists that have stood in solidarity with the Palestinian people over the years, and particularly those that have been murdered by Apartheid Israel: Rachel Corrie; Tom Hurndall; and Vittorio Arrigoni.

2014 was designated the year of solidarity with the Palestinian people by the UN and 29 November marks 37 years since Resolution 181, calling for two States. Activists honoured the brave work of international solidarity activists over the years, particularly the work for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) and the work towards European States recognising the State of Palestine.

As activities took place across the world for Palestine, activists in SFP and Nablus praised international efforts and also called for a continuation and escalation of those efforts, following the failure of Resolution 181 to establish an independent Palestinian State and secure the right of return for refugees. Activists called for a free, democractic Palestine from the river to the sea.

28/11/14: From Jericho to Jerusalem

On Friday 28 November activists from SFP joined activists from the Ramallah area popular resistance to march from Jericho to Jerusalem to highlight the unity of the West Bank of Palestine with Palestine’s capital city, Jerusalem. The peaceful protestors were met with volley’s of tear gas and sound bombs by the Israeli Army.

In recent months Apartheid Israel has stepped up its attacks on the capital of Palestine, Jerusalem. They have been seeking to further encircle the capital with illegal Jewish only colonies, cutting it off from the West Bank of Palestine. Numerous violent attacks on the Palestinians of Jerusalem have taken place, mass internment and home demolitions.

On the day before the UN’s international day of solidarity with the Palestinian people, SFP took to the streets with other Palestinians to assert their resistance and steadfastness in the face of the violent colonial Occupation. SFP also joins calls for all people around the world to escalate their activities against the Israeli Occupation and those that profit from it. Activists also paid tribute to the role of some European Governments of taking the step of recognising the State of Palestine.

26/11/14: Murder with impunity

On Tuesday 25 November an Israeli bus driver plowed into 2 Palestinians on their way home from work near Jenin, murdering 21 year old Noor Hassan Naim Salim. On Wednesday 26 November mourners buried the soon-to-be-married Noor in Nablus’s Western cemetery.

Attacks on Palestinians have increased exponentially in the last year. Despite the young man being murdered it is unlikely the Israeli bus driver will be prosecuted, with the majority of crimes against Palestinians ignored. However, when Palestinians run over and kill Israelis it is automatically deemed a terrorist act and the driver is usually shot dead by Israeli Border Police.

Organisers announce “Global Political Prisoner’s Day” – 12/12/14

Message from the organisers of the Global Political Prisoner’s Day:
Palestinian cartoonist Naji Salim al-Ali's Handala.

Palestinian cartoonist Naji Salim al-Ali’s Handala.

The people’s uprising is not a crime, it is universal justice
The unions, human rights activists, academics and students of Argentina have united with various groups worldwide, including Palestinian human rights organisations, (such as the Free Shireen Issawi Campaign) to call for a day of action for  Global Political Prisoner’s Day, on 12 December 2014.
On this day in 2013 ten Argentinian oil workers were convicted to prison sentences in a case, their supporters affirm, was a grave violation of human rights, including torture. The oil workers stood up for all workers to have better working conditions, setting up assemblies to decide how to fight.
Today Palestinians are imprisoned for challenging Israel’s apartheid state. They are imprisoned because they fight for the return of their stolen land which continues to be illegal annexed.
Palestinians, including children, are tried in military courts. The conviction rate, according to a 2013 US State Department Human Rights Report, is over 99%. Since 1967 700,000 Palestinians have been imprisoned; 42% of all Palestinian men have been jailed. Israel also practices Administrative Detention, imprisoning Palestinians without charge or trial in violation of international law. Many prisoners suffer from medical neglect.
On Wednesday 5 November a French Court rejected the ninth appeal of George Abdhala, who after 30 years imprisonment is the longest serving Political prisoner in Europe. The decision was not issued by the court but was announced by the Federation of Jewish organisations in France. Governmental political convenience also allows cleared prisoners to languish in Guantanamo Bay.
In Egypt thousands of political opponents have been imprisoned, some have been tortured to death. Three Al Jazeera journalists have also been detained. China is thought to have the most political prisoners in the world. In Tibet and East Turkestan people are arrested for peaceful protests. Worldwide people, too numerous to mention, risk their lives for the ideal of freedom, democracy and social and political justice.
People exercising their legal right to resist occupation, or who resort to democratic violence having exhausted all peaceful means, are political prisoners. They should therefore be treated with all the conventions and rights applicable to prisoners of war. There have always been some brave men and women who are prepared to risk their lives and liberty for their people’s freedom. It is unacceptable that those people should be detained without trail, kept in inhumane conditions and face torture or medical neglect.
We start this campaign for the independence and freedom of all oppressed people against those who disregard human value, rights and liberty. We call upon all who reject injustice in the world to participate on the 12 December, making it a day for political prisoners. We are aware that each country or organisation will have particular causes to which they are dedicated. They will bring their energies and resources to that cause but ideally will remain aware that an injury to one is an injury to all. We intend that this day will become an annual event until all prisoners are freedom.
Our message is:
  1. Global Political Prisoners Day must become an annual tradition to call for the release of all political prisoners until freedom.
  2. The international struggle for oppressed peoples everywhere should be enhanced. The people’s uprising is not a crime, it is universal justice
  3. People resisting the occupation of their land should be treated according to International conventions concerning prisoners of war when they are detained.

15/11/14: SFP reclaim land in Khirbet Hamam

On Saturday 15 November SFP planted tree samplings in Khirbet Hamam, north of Tulkarem. The village is surrounded by illegal Jewish-only colonies, built on villagers land.

The village is the site of ancient ruins and of great historical importance to Palestine. The villagers are regularly harassed by the illegal settlers, who are seeking to steal more land and force villagers from their ancestral lands. The settlers regularly attack villagers as they attend to their animals and throw stones and curse at them.

SFP stands firm with the villagers of Khirbet Hamam and supports them in remaining on their land and reclaiming stolen land back from the Jewish terrorists. SFP has launched a campaign to request donations to buy more olive trees and herbs to plant the land and reclaim it from the settlers. To find out how to donate and more about the campaign please click here.

08/11/14: Tearing down the Wall – 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Palestine says “Tear down the Wall”

On Saturday 8 November activists set fire to a military tower and checkpoint just east of Nablus city and sprayed graffitti. Activists said:

From Berlin to Palestine tearing down the Walls.

The action marked the 25th anniversary of East Berliners tearing down the Wall that had separated families and Germans for decades. The Apartheid Wall that imprisons Palestinians in the West Bank area of Palestine and divides them from historical Palestine and their capital city is much longer than the Berlin Wall, condemned by the world. 10 years ago the International Criminal Court (ICJ) ruled in their advisory opinion that the Wall should be taken down and was illegal. The ICJ further stated States should not legitimise the Wall and work towards its removal.

SFP is clear that it will not wait another 10 years for the World to bring down the Walls that seek to imprison and divide them. We call on people around the World to help us tear down the Wall and end Apartheid.

07/11/14: SFP and Nablus face the Occupation in solidarity with Al Quds

Following noon prayers on Friday 7 November SFP and the youth of Nablus simultaneously marched on Huwwara checkpoint, just south of Nablus, and Beit Furik checkpoint, to the east of the city.  The Israeli Army opened fire on the demonstrators with live ammunition, rubber coated steel bullets and tear gas. Four youth were hit with live bullets and transferred to Rafidia hospital for treatment.

The march was organised in support of occupied Jerusalem (Al Quds) and the Al Asqa compound, home to the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam. The Compound has come under sustained attack from Jewish terrorists, supported by the Israeli Army. Israel regularly attacks the holy Compound and restricts Palestinians from worshipping.

SFP calls on people of all faiths and denominations around the World to join the Palestinians struggle for freedom and the protection of the holy city of Jerusalem from Apartheid Israel. We encourage people to join the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) and to actively world to highlight those companies and Government’s that facilitate and support the illegal Occupation of Palestine.

Reclaiming the Land: SFP launches its 2014 olive tree and thyme planting campaign

Reclaiming the land

SFP launches olive tree and thyme appeal

SFP Olive trees and thyme

Today SFP is launching an appeal for donations to fund the purchase of olive trees and thyme to reclaim stolen Palestinian land. The appeal forms part of SFP’s philosophy to support our fellow Palestinians not only to remain steadfast on their land but also to take back the land from the Occupiers.

Year on year the Occupation has stolen more and more Palestinian land. SFP and our volunteers say no more. We are taking proactive, non-violent action to reclaim the land and help build a free Palestinian State.

We kindly ask people locally and around the world to help us in this endeavour by donating whatever you can enabling us to purchase olive trees and thyme. The trees and herbs are planted with farmers with the support of SFP volunteers and help create a sustainable income for the local community as well supporting resistance to the illegal Occupation.

Olive trees are a symbol of Palestine and the Palestinian struggle. They support life across the land and the Israeli Occupation is systematically trying to destroy that history and legacy.

This year SFP is also expanding our annual appeal to include the purchase of thyme. Thyme is also integral to Palestine and particularly Palestinian women who grow the herb, providing the main ingredient to the delicious Palestinian tea served across the Middle East.

We would be very grateful for any donations you were able to make and our volunteers will plant in your name.

To find out how to donate please visit our ‘Donate’ page where you can donate to Palestinian or American bank accounts and via PayPal.

Thank you.

A mother’s pain – a message from the mother of detainee Shireen Issawi

Below is a message from the mother of detainee Shireen Issawi, Laila Issawi. Laila visited her daughter on 3 November 2014. Despite her physical and mental anguish Laila was able to share her experience with us. Please share Laila’s message widely.

Yesterday I went to visit my daughter Shireen, and I suffered from this visit in a way that I will not forget. Usually, when I visit her, it comforts me, and makes me forget my physical exhaustion, but this time it really wrecked me. Shireen was ill and looked thin and exhausted, as if she had been sick for a long time, and when I asked her how she was doing, she told me: ‘Since the day of the trial I have been feeling very cold, and started having pain and shivers in my whole body, and caught a cold. Until now, I am still in the same condition”. May God bring you health, my daughter. I had not sat there for half an hour, and then a servicewoman came and said: “The visit is over.”

I asked her why only half an hour, while we always visit 45 minutes, and she answered that she is being punished. I told her that we always visit her for 45 minutes while she is being punished. She said: “This is the law”, so I didn’t answer her and we left. On the way home, all the time I was thinking about my daughter, and about who is looking after her while she is living in an isolation cell that is cold and damp.

When we arrived home I felt dizzy, and had a headache, and when I checked my blood sugar I found it severely elevated, up to 465, so I took an injection of insulin and sat on my bed, as I couldn’t sleep from thinking about my daughter, may God protect her.

The message of Shireen to those who are struggling for the rights of the political prisoners, was that she is calling upon you to continue on this road, for the sake of the sick prisoners in the Ramleh hospital, and for the prisoners who are on a hunger strike, and that their cause must be reactivated, and she calls upon you to stay true to the service of the motherland and the political prisoners.”

Palestinian lawyers, Shireen and Shadi Issawi and Amjad Al Safadi were arrested on 6 March 2014.  Shireen’s brother, Medhat Issawi, the office manager for the legal firm where all the lawyers work was arrested six days later on 12 March.  Shadi was swiftly released on bail but Shireen and Medhat remain imprisoned. Shireen has been held in isolation since 5 August 2014 and her health is failing.
SFP calls on all Palestinians to rise up and bring all the Palestinian prisoners home. We also encourage people around the world to join our uprising and work to expose the international complicity with the Occupation and particularly internment of Palestinians. UPDATE: Detainee Ghassan Najjar’s family appeal to human rights organisations for visitation

On Monday 3 November Ghassan Najjar’s father submitted an appeal to the International Committee of the Red Cross to appeal to them to intervene to pressure Israeli authorities to allow him and his wife to visit Ghassan. Ghassan has been interned by Israel since he was kidnapped from his home by the Army on 27 August 2014.

Since his kidnapping Ghassan was held in solitary confinement with no access to legal advice, his family or human rights organisations for nearly a month. He was then transferred to Megiddo prison, inside the ’48 borders in violation of international law, and his elderly mother and father have been denied visits with the Occupation citing unexplained “security” reasons. He is due to appear back in front of a military judge on 24 November, nearly 3 months since his kidnapping.

Palestinians are regularly denied permission to visit their interned family members. By transferring Palestinians to prisons inside the ’48 borders Israel is violating international law and ensuring limited access to their families. SFP members regularly attend the military courts to observe and provide support to interned Palestinians. Please click here for a recent account of a day in Salem Military Court.

We would kindly ask those that have not already done so to sign our petition calling for the release of SFP members Ghassan Najjar and Dr. Yousef Abdul Haq and share this with your friends. This petition will be submitted to the Chief Prosecutor prior to Ghassan’s next appearance in Court on 24 November, and therefore we need as many signatures as possible to add weight to the appeal. Please sign and share the petition by clicking here.

SFP calls on all Palestinians to rise up and bring all the Palestinian prisoners home. We also encourage people around the world to join our uprising and work to expose the international complicity with the Occupation and particularly internment of Palestinians.
